About the project

This is a personal project that I started working on quite recently. As a great fan of comic books and graphic novels, I decided to finally try making one of my own.

Inspired by fairy tales , folklore and modern adaptations of them, I came up with a story about a modern-day human, an elf and a troll who form an unlikely alliance to stop an evil goblin warlock who poses a great threat to both their worlds.

"Magick Quest" mainly takes place in a parallel world inhabited by magical creatures after they were forced to leave Earth due to an ancient war between humans and magic and the main trio are forced to team up after relics of the past come back to haunt them.

I decided to use a combination of 2D and 3D techniques to produce this project, mainly using Blender 3D to create the characters and the worlds that they live in while also using hand drawn elements.

Breakdown Brief

For this project, I decided to create the main characters and their environments from scratch using Blender 3D but as I was going for like a graphic noveI look, I used improvised toon shaders and the Freestyle Line option to achieve a kind of 2D hand drawn style. The images were then altered and composited using GIMP to achieve more of an illustration feel before importing them into Indesign where I would set up a proper comic layout complete with speech bubbles and captions.

Main Character Designs

Walter Isacc Zander - the main protagonist of the story who becomes the first present-day human to practice and master sorcery, with the help of a talisman that once belonged to an ancient sorcerer. After his family is threatened by an unknown force, he is determined to keep them safe and put an end to the danger once and for all.

Viyra the Nightstar Elf - the deuteragonist of the story and a young warrior in-training who is determined to keep her home and family safe from any threat. Highly skilled in all forms of combat but not so much in casting advanced spells. She always carries an enchanted silver staff that could also turn into a sword or a bow and arrow.
